I want to begin with a brief introduction. I am a mother of 6, grandmother to 7 (almost 8), a wife, a teacher, and a scholar. I have multiple college degrees, and without trying to sound too proud, I consider myself to be a fairly intelligent and street savvy person. So it was with great confidence that my husband and I set out to relocate to Japan from America ten years ago with our two sons. Our daughters were grown and most had families of their own, and we wanted to give our youngest son, who was 4 years old at the time, a chance at a violence free life, and broaden his horizons. I knew there would be an adjustment period while I learned the language and the culture, but I was certain it would be something I would have a firm handle on by my 5th year here. Ten years later it is still a struggle. Looking back, I know that had I chosen a country with a similar alphabet it may have been easier to learn the language, or a western country with somewhat similar cultural practices, but Japan is truly like an entirely different world. Having said that, I do not in any way regret my decision to move here, and Japan is the place where I plan on retiring and spending the rest of my life. In the posts that will follow this introduction, I will talk about some of the struggles I experienced and have overcome, and some of the struggles I have yet to overcome. Japan is a wonderful country, with amazing people and a long and rich history. It is also one that I may never fully grasp, which has both positive and negative aspects. I will always find something new here, but I may never feel like I am fully a part of the country. I am happy to share my experiences, I hope that you can find some useful, and entertaining information.
